It has been a long time since I wrote in this space. Literal years have passed. The pages of our story continue to be filled, adventures continue to be had, grownups and children alike are still in a perpetual state of learning….
Yet there is always a draw for me to this space. I like writing. I like to pen thoughts, write unsent letters, spill words on to a page and share some things with any and all who decide to read. So, I am trying this again. Thanks for coming a long.
So, while there are oodles of things that I can write about, I keep coming back to the words from kid #1, J’s, school book titled, “The Radical Book for Kids”. From the onset we were challenged to summarize the Gospel message in a single sentence. M.D. Williams provided a simple yet thought-provoking response: “God made it, we broke it, Jesus fixes it.”
Immediately, I made a mental deposit of that thought. And J, knowing me fairly well, said it would make a great tattoo! (Let’s be real, he is not wrong.) It is oversimplified, underdeveloped, but TRUE. Our life is guided by the belief that we were created by a Loving, Perfect Creator who handed things to us. Then, as true to our human nature, we broke it. In my mind’s eye, I see a child walking back to their parents holding the scattered pieces of a glass ornament; shoulders slumped, eyes filled with tears, and worry about the response to come.
But something happens….Or maybe it is better said that something doesn’t happen. He doesn’t yell in anger, there are no harsh words, there isn’t even an inquiry. Instead, the Creator gathers all the broken bits from our hands, and asks us to wait. He leaves the room for a moment, but when He comes back, in His hands is another precious ornament. This time, unbreakable! And He hands it back to us again, having relieved a broken heart, a worried mind, an anxious spirit.
It is fixed.
My relationship with God is forever evolving. And I am grateful that He journeys with me, full of grace, patience, and love, as I try to figure it out again and again. I can go deeper, more spiritual, more philosophical but for today it is simple….
God made it, I broke it, Jesus fixes it.
